Kane O’Hanlon is a former swimmer and Olympic god medalist. After walking away from the sport, he has invested his life to open PRO, a rescue and recovery business in Hawaii. He has made it his life to teach and train swimmers and surfers breathing techniques to help ensure them extra time to be rescued if needed.
Avery Dullahan is the only girl in the Dullahan’s family. Her four older brothers are part of, and lead, the most notorious biker gangs on the island. She tries to stay away from her brothers’ jobs, and frees herself with surfing. She used to surf competitively, but lately cannot get her head in the game to enjoy it.
At the near drowning of Avery’s best friend Natalie, Avery and Kane meet and start a no strings relationship. Avery is extremely free in her sexuality and tries to help Kane lose all of his restraints that he holds on himself. Kane just can’t let go, and ends things with Avery to preserve who he thinks he should be.
“She’d never met anyone so bothered by his own sexuality, yet who owned it with everything he was when all those guards fell down. The savior and the sinner. For some reason, he’d convinced himself he couldn’t be those two things at the same time.”
Three years later, they start up their relationship again after Avery asks Kane for help with her brother. This time, Kane has completely embraced himself sexually, and their connection is stronger than ever. When her brothers’ biker gang puts Avery’s life on the line, everyone’s loyalty and love are tested. Will their love be enough?
So this book was H O T…seriously. I would love for Kane to unleash himself on me…if you know what I mean. I think that’s what drew me into the story; I wanted to see where Kane and Avery’s relationship was going to go. Because not knowing their backgrounds, I had a hard time connecting with the characters individually, and parts of the story seemed to jump around. Leaning about why Kane walked away from swimming gave me a lot of insight into who he is, but it was a little harder to get to know Avery. On a side note of me thinking of it, are there really that many Irish people living in Hawaii? All in all, it was a good start for a series, and I want to see where else Sara Brookes takes it. I would give this book 4 out of 5 stars.
Kane had a very bad feeling about what he was walking into.
He should have listened to his gut and kept his ass in bed today.
The fence closed behind them as they pulled through. Avery was out of the Jeep before he slipped the gear into park. She tapped her fist against the hood, running toward the building across the back of the property. “Back there.”
Kane grabbed the kit he kept stowed in the backseat, hoping like hell whatever he was about to walk into was something he could handle alone. A loud scream tore through the air, and Avery increased her pace.
He burst through the door after she did, and stepped into a bloodbath. The room was filled with yelling, swearing, and the sharp tang of something he was all too familiar with. The concrete floor appeared to have seen better days—with blood spreading out like a macabre Rorschach test that would have made Jason Vorhees proud. The blood that had been tracked from the door they’d entered and through the room was an indicator that whatever happened had occurred elsewhere.
At least he hoped so.
Dodging whatever sort of violence this crowd churned up wasn’t high on his list of things to do.
Sara Brookes is an award-winning author who has always been fascinated by the strange, the unusual, the twisted and the lost (tortured heroes are her personal favorite). She is an action movie junkie, addicted to coffee and has been known to stay up until the wee hours of the morning playing RPG video games. Despite all this, she is a romantic at heart and is always a sucker for an excellent love story. Born and bred in Virginia, Sara still lives there with her husband and daughter.
I’ll admit I came up with the initial idea for Riding Irish while marathon watching Sons of Anarchy last year. My favorite episodes were from the season three episodes where SAMCRO went to Ireland. (I do confess my love of Ireland and Irish things dates back to my childhood, so that isn’t a particularly shocking revelation *g*)
While writing characters with Irish roots and writing characters who rode motorcycles aren’t a foreign concept to me, I’d never thought to combine the two. Once the idea bloomed, it was a question of WHY DID’T I DO THIS SOONER!?!?
This book sounds really good!
Thank you so much for the wonderful review and for having me as a quest today!
