They say everything happens for a reason- that there’s always a light at the end of the tunnel. For the longest time I didn’t think that was true. I had stumbled around in the dark for so many years that I didn’t think I would ever find my way out. But when I finally did, it came in the most unexpected way.
Miles Hollins had been my brother’s best friend for as long as I could remember. We didn’t like each other much growing up. Or rather, we couldn’t stand each other. But after ten years of being gone, a lot had changed.
He wasn’t the same boy I remembered. I wasn’t the same girl either. So much had happened.
I moved away and got married.
Miles joined the military.
We both returned home broken in our own way.
I struggled to find my place in my new life. Miles struggled just to get through the day. But together we slowly began to heal. I quieted his demons and he gave me a sense of belonging. For a while that was enough.
But this is real life, and in real life nothing stays perfect forever. In real life not every story ends with a happily ever after. Sometimes the scars we carry are just too deep.
I promised him I would fight.
He promised me I would lose.
I’ll do everything in my power to prove him wrong. Because it’s when you find the one thing you can’t live without, that you truly find yourself.
All That We Are is a standalone contemporary romance.
This book is AMAZING!! I’ve never read or heard of Melissa Toppen prior to seeing this book on my blogger sign ups and I fully admit that I judged this book by the cover – did you see it?! As much as the cover got me interested, the story kept me interested. If it weren’t for adulting and my husband, I would have probably just read straight through.
Harlow has returned home, tail between her legs, moving into her brother’s house (because moving back in with dad and step-mom was just too much). Since she got married, she has not had to work for anything. In fact, Harlow’s husband refused to LET her work. She’s excited to be on her own now and to make her own money and her own decisions – she didn’t factor in that one of those decisions could involve brother’s best friend, Miles.
Miles and Harlow have had a love -hate relationship their entire lives. A little heavier on the hate. Until Miles can’t stop himself from offering Harlow a job. Soon they find themselves inseparable. Miles tackles addressing his relationship with Harlow’s dad and brother.
Miles is not the same man that went to war. He has seen things and done things that would forever change anyone. When those nightmares begin to effect Harlow he knows that he needs to end things. He doesn’t realize that his heart is just as attached as hers. Now he can only hope that he has enough time to fix it before Harlow finds someone that will treat her as she should be treated.
Amazing book! I’ll definitely pick up more by Melissa Toppen in the future!
